New doctoral dissertation: I Want Good Grades. An Ethnological Study on Practices and Resources of Pupils in Lower Secondary Education

By Göran Nygren, PhD candidate in Ethnology at Uppsala University

Geijer Hall, Campus English Park, Uppsala University, and over zoom, June 11 at 1:15

What do pupils do to achieve high grades and a high merit rating? What ideas do they have about school? Which conditions and resources are significant? In the thesis, Göran Nygren examines how pupils at lower secondary schools achieve high grades at schools with high results. The location is the university city of Uppsala.

The study is ethnographic and we follow pupils in three classes in lower secondary school. Based on observations, dialogues and interviews, their strategies for school work and their ideas about school and the future are analysed. The book draws attention to the crucial importance of homework and parents. The results of the study bring into focus difficulties for school to offer equality in education and social justice.
